What if we told you the worst person you know could be the deciding vote on new abortion restrictions in Virginia? What if we told you we have the chance to kick him out of office on Tuesday, June 20th?
Meet Democratic state Senator Joe Morrissey. Joe is a straight-up bad person, and he’s dangerous, too. In his too-long time in office, Joe has voted to close down health centers that provide abortion care, co-sponsored an abortion ban that would've restricted access to care for Virginians facing severe fetal health diagnoses, and recently said he’d keep an “open mind” on other abortion ban proposals.
He’s also a cartoon villain in his personal life. He’s been disbarred twice, charged with crimes related to a relationship with his underage secretary, accused of domestic violence and—get this—won reelection from jail.
He’s being challenged by pro-choice former Delegate and all-around badass Lashrecse Aird, and Democrats are rallying around her. She’s been endorsed by all six Democratic women in the state Senate, as well as VA Representatives Jennifer McClellan and Abigail Spanberger and Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner.
Here’s why this is so important: with an extreme Republican governor, Democratic control of (at least) one legislative chamber is the only thing standing between Virginians and new abortion restrictions. Majorities in both chambers are incredibly narrow right now, and they could get narrower after the general election in November.
Here’s how you can help:
- Come knock doors for Lashrecse Aird with us THIS Saturday, June 17th. Vote Save America volunteers and staff will be there, and Aird will kick off the canvass so you can see in person how great she is. (plus you get to meet us and we’re wonderful)
- If you can’t make it to Richmond this weekend, you can help out from home! Sign up for a phone bank with New Virginia Majority, a group that is campaigning for Aird and other progressive candidates.
- Donate to New Virginia Majority as part of our F*ck Bans: Fight Back Fund. We can’t take freedom for granted in Virginia.
Hope to see you this weekend!
- Team VSA
