I’m on my way home from New Hampshire, where our movement just showed the power of the political revolution we’re building. Bernie Sanders won New Hampshire because our movement knocked 20,000 doors, made 33,000 thousand phone calls, and turned out in record numbers to the polls.
Bernie’s victory in New Hampshire shows just how ready we are as a country to elect Green New Deal leaders at all levels of office. We need a Bernie Sanders presidency, but no President can win a Green New Deal alone. We also need to elect candidates down the ballot who can help usher in our vision for a Green New Deal. And we need a grassroots movement of millions of people to push politicians to act at the scale of the crisis.
The next major test for the Green New Deal is in less than a month on March 3rd in my home state of Texas. If we win there, it’ll show we can win anywhere.

Winning these races is key to winning a Green New Deal. Sunrise Movement endorsed candidates Jessica Cisneros (TX-28), Mike Siegel (TX-10), Morgan Harper (OH-03) Marie Newman (IL-03), and Robert Emmons, Jr. (IL-01) all have primaries next month, and are all running boldly on the Green New Deal against corporate backed opponents.
If our movement flexes together, we can overcome the odds and send a powerful message that running on the Green New Deal is THE winning electoral strategy in 2020.
Growing up in Texas under Bush’s presidency, I never felt like I could rely on the politicians in office to do anything but cause problems. That’s why when I see the incredible progressive Green New Deal champions who are running for Congress in Texas like Jessica Cisneros and Mike Siegel, I know this is an opportunity to transform our country’s politics that we can’t waste.
Jessica is a first-generation American immigration lawyer running against Henry Cuellar (“Big Oil’s Favorite Democrat”), and Mike is a civil rights lawyer and former public school teacher. They’re both ready to join the Squad in Congress in redefining what is politically possible, not just in my state, but in the entire country, and the world.
But they can’t win without people like you and me putting skin in the game. These candidates have refused corporate money, and each one of them knows that it is people power that will get them into office.
