John,
Seven years ago today, the lives of 49 of our LGBTQ+ neighbors were cut short in the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida. Unfortunately, attacks on the LGBTQ+ community are on the rise, with 400 separate bills being introduced in state legislatures across the country this year attacking LGBTQ+ rights. Many policies target trans people, including attacks on gender-affirming care.
I am here to tell our LGBTQ+ family that you matter and I commit to fighting for you in Congress.
One critical step toward equal protection under the law is ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). That’s why I’ve joined with fellow Squad members Cori Bush and Ayanna Pressley in demanding Congress remove the final roadblock in ratifying the ERA―a critical tool to pushing back against discrimination based on sex or gender, including discrimination based on someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
Click here to become a grassroots co-signer of the Equal Rights Amendment and demand Congress act to enshrine protections for women and LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. Constitution.
In 2020, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the ERA, which meets the threshold for a constitutional amendment. Unfortunately, when the ERA was originally passed in 1972, the legislation included a seven-year deadline for ratification.
Congress just needs to repeal that original deadline and the ERA will be enshrined in the Constitution―and become a critical tool to challenge anti-LGBTQ+ and transphobic legislation.
Marginalized communities―particularly Black women and LGBTQ+ people―have always been at the forefront of the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment. This Pride Month, demand Congress act to prohibit discrimination based on sex. Add your name today as a grassroots co-sponsor of the ERA.
I will never stop fighting for the rights of all of us. I’m grateful to have you by my side.
In solidarity,
Rashida
