THIS JUST IN: IUOE 99 authorizes strike at DynCorp RBOS facilities
Members of Operating Engineers Local 99 have unanimously authorized a strike against DynCorp International's Regional Base Operational Services (RBOS) facilities. The IUOE Local 99 union hall was packed at near-capacity Tuesday night with members frustrated with ongoing negotiations with DynCorp. The company is demanding a contract that would eliminate the workers’ pension, which has been in Local 99’s contracts for almost 50 years. “This is not the course we wished to take,” said Local 99 Business Manager Donald P. Havard, “but the aggressive bargaining position of the employer has tied our hands.” The strike vote was unanimous and allows Local 99’s Executive Board to call a strike at any time. DynCorp International is a successor to EMCOR; the majority of the affected members work at DynCorp's local top-secret RBOS facilities.
Workers “ready to strike” Giant, Safeway
Giant and Safeway workers are signing strike signs at every store in the DMV area, reports UFCW Local 400. “Next week, we'll deliver them to both companies. While we are continuing negotiations with both companies, we're getting ready to strike if that's what it takes to get a fair contract.” Key issues at stake include wages, schedules, healthcare and pensions. “We'll do what it takes to win the fair contract we deserve,” said the union.
Silent and standing up
AFGE activists stood in silence for 20 minutes at the Hart Senate building at noon Tuesday -- 1 minute for every month since union-busting executive orders were issued. Hundreds government workers from across the country are in Washington for the American Federation of Government Employees’ annual legislative conference. The “Stand Up, Stand In” action raised awareness of “how this administration is hurting federal employees, federal agencies, and the American public by systematically stripping workers of their collective bargaining rights, politicizing the work of non-partisan civil servants, and understaffing agencies to justify further cuts and outsourcing,” said AFGE.
MontCo workers reach TA
At a little after 2am last Saturday morning, UFCW Local 1994 – the Montgomery County Government Employees Organization -- reached a tentative agreement. Union president Gino Renne (2nd from right) said the contract includes “tremendous progress” on key issues; details are expected to be released soon.
MWC nominations set for Tuesday
Nominations for President of the Metro Washington Council AFL-CIO -- and for two vacant Board positions -- will be conducted at the regular MWC Delegates’ meeting scheduled for Tuesday, February 18, 6:30PM at the AFL-CIO. The elections will be held at the regular March meeting on Monday, March 16. Affiliates must be paid up in order for their delegates to participate in the nominations and election; click here for election-related documents.
