Friend,

The latest Year in Hate and Extremism Report
[link removed]

invokes a clear call to action: We must work together to expose and
expel institutionalized racism from our systems and institutions and
remedy its harms, particularly to Black and Brown communities.

Will you make a gift to the SPLC to support our work for justice,
equity and human rights for all?

You have likely already read that our recent report tallied 1,225
active hate and antigovernment extremist groups in the United States.
During the 2022 midterms, the SPLC Action Fund tracked 99 political
candidates with apparent ties to extremist groups, or who expressed
sympathy toward their messages. Ideologies embraced by these
candidates ranged from antigovernment extremism to antisemitic and
QAnon beliefs to anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-immigrant posturing.
Twenty-three of the 99 extremist-tied candidates won their elections.

2022 YIH Electoral Extremism

Consequently, last year was record-breaking for anti-LGBTQ+
legislation. Elected officials, guided by anti-LGBTQ+ groups, encoded
hate by introducing more than 300 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in 2022, many
targeting transgender youth. Eighteen states now ban transgender youth
from participating on sports teams consistent with their gender
identity, while three states have banned or criminalized
gender-affirming care for youth.

The mainstreaming of anti-LGBTQ+ hate is tied to a broader assault on
bodily autonomy, gender equity and minority groups. In recent months,
disinformation campaigns have targeted people of color, Jews, the
LGBTQ+ community, young people and those who can give birth -
and pushed hard-right adherents to violent acts, intimidation and
other authoritarian tactics against those who oppose their movement.

We are equipped to face this challenge. The SPLC is continuing to
conduct deep investigative research and provide congressional
testimony on our findings. And our original, award-winning anti-bias
education materials are helping to defend and strengthen the
nation's democratic institutions and to build community
resilience. These resources are needed more now than ever. Will you
make a gift to the SPLC today to support this work?

To achieve our shared vision of an anti-racist society and concretely
improve people's lives, the SPLC is fighting to protect and grow
political, economic and social power in Black and Brown communities.
We are also leading the effort to secure more funding for hate crime
prevention and response initiatives. And, we're calling on
policymakers to:

* Mandate police department hate crime reporting to the FBI and
the appropriate state agency.

* Expand interagency coordination for assessing the nature and
magnitude of domestic extremism and require regular public
reports.

* Address extremism in the military at every stage: screening
recruits, clarifying prohibitions against advocating for, or
involvement in, supremacist or extremist activity for
active-duty personnel, and specific efforts for veterans to
transition to civilian life, including counseling, mental
health, and social welfare services.

* Promote civics and inclusive education and democracy-building
school initiatives that celebrate our nation's diversity.

Ours is a strong public movement for justice and human rights, and we
refuse to allow hate to guide our country forward. This is an
opportunity to help our neighbors and communities understand that the
despair of white nationalism is not the future of America.

Thank you for empowering our movement for generations to come.

In solidarity,

The Southern Poverty Law Center
