The American Rescue Plan and the bipartisan infrastructure bill made investments to expand affordable broadband across the country, and South Carolina is seeing the results firsthand. According to BroadbandNow Research, South Carolina is ranked No. 6 in the country for broadband access -- up from 31 in 2020! --  and No.1 in the southeast.

A South Carolina State University alum, Jim knows the important role Historically Black Colleges and Universities play in providing access to high-quality education and he’s a tireless champion in Congress for HBCUs. Recently, he announced investments that will help preserve and restore HBCUs in South Carolina, including projects at SC State, Benedict College, and Allen University.

The South Carolina legislature passed and the governor signed an extreme six-week abortion ban -- before many women even know they are pregnant -- that criminalizes reproductive health care and its providers and will have dangerous consequences for women across our state.

On the Ballot 2022

Jim is on the ballot next year and he’s working to elect other Democrats across the country -- including President Biden. (Jim is Co-chair for President Biden’s 2024 campaign!) We’re building our organization for 2024, and June is an important month for us as we approach the next quarterly FEC deadline. We’re hoping we can count on your help -- will you contribute before the deadline on June 30th?

Did You Know? (World Turtle Day Edition)

World Turtle Day was last month, and you might know that turtles are Jim’s favorite animal. (If you spend enough time around the Assistant Leader like we do, you’re bound to hear a lot of turtle jokes and puns.) But do you know how many turtle figurines Jim has collected in his office in Congress?

ANSWER: Hundreds.

We weren’t kidding about his love of turtles! Jim is a big believer in the old adage: “Slow and steady wins the race.” To (belatedly) celebrate World Turtle Day, we revisited this 2019 interview where the Assistant Leader discusses what we can learn from turtles:
