Dear John,
No phrase has been used more manipulatively than “national security.”
Over the last fifty years, how many wrong minded wars have been fought, millions of lives wasted, and fortunes squandered because we were led to believe it was for the sake of “national security?” Our military madness has not made us more secure; it has made us less secure. It has weakened us in the eyes of the world.
The days of pulling the wool over the eyes of the American people – using phrases like “the national security interests of the United States” – to justify military action when in fact that action served no one but a cabal of defense contractors, oil companies, and neocons, will end with me.
If anything has weakened our nation, it’s the understandable cynicism of the American people in the face of so many lies we have been told - particularly regarding our military pursuits. With my presidency, we will begin to repair the bonds between people and our government that have been so tragically frayed.
And we will redefine “national security.”
We will be “secure” when our access to health care is secure, our access to education is secure, our children’s safety is secure, our way to make a living wage is secure, our access to housing is secure, the safety of our water and food are secure, and our democracy is secure.
The president must oversee both our domestic and our international policies. As President, I will use the power of Commander-in-Chief in the most sober way [[link removed]] ; on my watch, U.S. forces would never see combat other than in the most critically necessary circumstances. And, here at home, I will vigorously push policies that help our people thrive [[link removed]] . Both responsibilities are equally important, to our country and to the world. To serve them both will be my solemn vow.

Join me for our next Firelight Chat this Wednesday at 6pm ET / 3pm PT as we explore these concepts in the context of Israel and Palestine. I will be joined by Palestinian American political analyst Omar Baddar and J Street’s Josh Lockman for what is sure to be an enlightening discussion.
