MONDAY E'NEWS Legislative Update 6.12.23 No new gun control legislation has been brought up in the Michigan House of Representatives or Michigan Senate since the passage of Red Flag legislation in April. For the moment, Democrats do not appear to be able to find majorities to pass a ban on modern rifles or standard capacity magazines, the elimination of liability protections for firearms manufacturers, or attacks on local government preemption, let alone even more radical bills that would effectively eliminate open and concealed carry. Six Republican legislators introduced permitless carry bills this past week in the Michigan House of Representatives. While the bills have no chance of passage in the Democratic controlled Michigan Legislature, let alone be signed by the governor, MCRGO supports the continued reintroduction of this legislation until it eventually becomes law. Twenty-seven states already have permitless carry (AKA constitutional carry). We anticipated committee hearings this month on the bipartisan School Safety legislation that resulted from the Oxford workgroup. This package focuses on school security, student mental health resources, and the Okay2Say program. It was introduced in mid-February and referred to the House Education Committee where it has sat ignored the past four months. To date, the House Education Committee has not scheduled hearings on the bills. With only three weeks left before the Michigan Legislature begins its summer recess, it appears unlikely the bills will become law before the new school year. Last week, the Michigan Democratic Party launched attack ads against six Metro Detroit House Republicans for voting against gun control legislation as part of a six-figure ad buy that includes cable TV ads, social media ads, and interstate billboards. One of the ads follows below. Those legislators being attacked include Rep. Donni Steele (R-Lake Orion), Rep. Mark Tisdel (R-Rochester Hills), Rep. Jaime Thompson (R-Brownstown), Rep. Tom Kuhn (R-Troy), Rep. Alicia St. Germaine (R-Harrison Township), and Rep. James DeSana (R-Carleton). All six are in competitive districts the House Democratic Caucus hopes to flip in 2024. Three of the six were among the five Republicans that broke party lines to vote for storage mandate legislation in March in order to stave off these types of attacks. It didn't work.
