It's been another busy week in Washington and TX-23. I am proud to serve our district in Congress. Each day, I work to address your concerns and protect our liberties. From helping you navigate federal casework to addressing your concerns, my team and I are always here to help. Please read below for some updates on my recent work representing you in Washington, D.C. and back home in TX-23. Working for you in Washington Led For Country Caucus Roundtable on U.S.-Taiwan Relations On Thursday, I presided over another very productive meeting of the For Country Caucus as Co-Chair. This caucus is comprised of U.S. Representatives from both sides of the aisle, with the sole purpose of reaching a consensus on policies that will deliver results for our current and former servicemembers. My colleagues and I had the privilege of hearing from the former commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, Admiral Phil Davidson, and Senior Advisor for the U.S. Institute of Peace Asia Center, Vikram Singh. Our talks focused on ways to strengthen the U.S.-Taiwan relationship and strategic stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Stability in the Indo-Pacific region and suppressing China’s growing aggression relies on a robust U.S.-Taiwan relationship. The For Country Caucus is working hard to assure our allies that America is committed to strengthening our diplomatic and military ties. Backing the Blue - COPS Grants Also on Thursday, I sat down with KSAT to discuss the challenges our communities are facing when it comes to soaring rates of crime. That is why I am meeting with officials from my district and in Washington to see how allocated federal dollars can reach our men and women in law enforcement. One of the ways in which I am trying to bridge the divide is by encouraging our local officials to apply for COPS grants, through the Department of Justice. These grants serve to provide helpful resources to local law enforcement departments, and when allocated, give our communities the tools necessary to reclaim the safety of their neighborhoods. This year, I proudly authored letters of support to supplement COPS grants applications for San Antonio, Socorro, Uvalde, Marfa, Pearsall, and Castroville Police Departments and Medina County Sheriff's Department. These dollars can make a substantial difference in combatting crime in our communities. I will continue to fight tooth and nail for any law enforcement agency in TX-23 that applies for these funds in the future. Click here or below to watch my interview with KSAT. Biden's Border Crisis What's occurring at the border is far from normal. The media keeps saying the migrant influx post-Title 42 is "not that bad." Friday, I was on the ground in Del Rio and Eagle Pass - our Border Patrol Agents are working around the clock to safeguard the border and deal with the ongoing crisis post-Title 42. Since Title 42 was lifted, there have been over 86,000 encounters with undocumented migrants in the U.S. This fiscal year alone, Border Patrol has encountered 98 people on the terrorist watch list. The administration touts “success” in securing the border—but the numbers make it clear that we are far from what's normal for our border communities and beyond. High-speed chases, damaged property, and illegal drugs flooding our communities are not normal. I spoke with Spectrum News to provide further insight into what I am doing in Congress to advocate for my constituents along the border. Click here or below to watch. Congressman Tony Gonzales visits the border on June 9, 2023. Emi-Coke Accountability Act of 2023 For too long, communities in TX-23 have been witness to countless byproducts of the border crisis - including high-speed chases through our neighborhoods. In March, two of my constituents - Emilia Tambunga and Maria Alvarez Tambunga - were killed as a result of a collision during a high-speed chase between local authorities and an individual who was smuggling illegal migrants across the southern border. That is why on Monday I will be introducing the Emi-Coke Accountability Act of 2023. This legislation is designed to help keep communities alert and save lives. Specifically, members of the public would be made aware of high-speed chases in their area where the driver is suspected of trafficking illegal migrants. We cannot allow tragedies such as these to become normal. This bill is the first step towards ensuring our communities return to safe havens for people across TX-23. My team and I are always available to assist you. Please feel free to contact my office at any time.
