In recent years, JOhn, waiting for the biggest Supreme Court decisions in the month of June has become a nail-biting and fear-inducing experience. That's why the court's ruling on Thursday regarding racial gerrymandering was an incredible relief.
The Supreme Court found that Alabama's congressional map diluted the voices of Black voters — and in doing so, the court reaffirmed a critical portion of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) that has long protected majority-minority districts.
This is great news. But the threats to our democracy aren't going away any time soon (and it should be noted that we wouldn't have even been in this situation if the Supreme Court hadn't already severely weakened the VRA a decade ago). We cannot allow voting rights to continually hinge on thread-bare decisions by an increasingly-politicized court.
I've repeatedly voted in Congress to strengthen the Voting Rights Act and further reduce gerrymandering, and I'll never stop fighting to pass pro-democracy legislation into law — — and that's part of the reason Republicans are determined to defeat me.
