We’re fighting tooth and nail to hold right-wing media conglomerates like Sinclair accountable for gutting local newsrooms and broadcasting propaganda — and we’re pushing Congress to reject industry-written bills like the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, which would bail out Big Media and make the local-journalism crisis worse. But we can’t do this alone.
Thank you so much,

Friend,

All across the United States, local journalism has been decimated. For millions of people, it simply doesn’t exist — and communities are suffering in the absence of essential local reporting.

Without local news, corruption increases, fewer people vote and people struggle to find information on critical services.

At Free Press Action, we believe that journalism should provide everyone with truthful, relevant, accessible information. And we want journalism to represent communities fairly and facilitate civic dialogue to collectively address social problems.

That’s why we’re fighting so hard to hold right-wing media conglomerates like Sinclair accountable for gutting local newsrooms and broadcasting propaganda. It’s also why we’re pushing Congress to reject industry-written bills like the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, which would bail out Big Media and make the local-journalism crisis even worse. As a member of the Free Press Action community, you know what’s at stake. Will you make a gift right now to help fuel the advocacy needed to STOP Sinclair and fight for journalism policies that will benefit local communities?

It’s hard to feel hopeful when we watch Sinclair decimate local newsrooms — and when we see Congress focusing on bills that would do nothing to help revive local journalism in our communities. But believe us when we say good news is possible:

Free Press Action established a groundbreaking new model for sustainable local journalism through the Civic Info Bill, which created the New Jersey Civic Information Consortium. The consortium has given out nearly $2.5 million in grants since it launched in 2021 and received $4 million from the state to support local news-and-information initiatives in 2023.

It’s a model we hope to spread across the country — but this work takes deep resources to scale up. Give to Free Press Action today to help us promote positive solutions to the local-news crisis — and to help us fight policies that would only make matters worse.
