Pope Francis has been clear that no country should be forced to pay debts when this would lead to “hunger and despair for entire peoples”.
Yet that is the situation faced by many low-income countries on the front line of the climate crisis. They are being forced to pay for a crisis they didn’t cause – with huge bills for measures to rebuild from disasters and prepare for future catastrophes.
At the same time, private lenders are demanding billions in debt payments from the same countries: money that governments can’t then spend on tackling the climate emergency.
World leaders are beginning to discuss how to make sure countries have the money needed to fight the climate crisis. We need to heed the Holy Father’s reminder that “everything is connected” and recognise that this means tackling the injustice of the climate and debt crises together.
