Wow. Thanks to contributions from hundreds of CREW supporters, we not only met, but exceeed our July match challenge of $70,000!
This outpouring of support puts CREW in a strong position for the second half of 2019, enabling us to keep pace with the Trump administration’s corruption and attacks on the rule of law.
Here are just a few things CREW’s been working on lately:
Last week, we called for an impeachment inquiry into President Trump’s abuses of power, and released a report making the case that the only remaining option is a congressional inquiry. From obstruction of the Mueller investigation, to conspiracy to defraud campaign finance law, to acceptance of emoluments, President Trump’s behavior has crossed critical lines, and his resistance to any oversight has removed other options for accountability.
Thousands of you have joined CREW in calling for an impeachment inquiry by emailing your members of Congress, asking them to act. In recent days, a large number of House members have come out in favor of launching an impeachment inquiry, and your voices are clearly helping drive that conversation. If you haven’t emailed your member of Congress yet, take action now and help build momentum for an inquiry.
CREW Deputy Director Donald Sherman recently testified before the House Ethics Committee about how to rebuild faith in the ethics of members of Congress, and ensure that conflicts of interest are prevented before they even come up. We have seen our share of congressional scandals this year, from Rep. Duncan Hunter to Rep. Chris Collins—the time for reform is now.
Of course, members of the Trump administration have not escaped our scrutiny in the past two weeks. Stephen Miller and Dan Scavino both disclosed gifts from the Patriot Legal Expense Fund on their 2018 financial disclosures. The fund was created to offset legal expenses associated with the Russia investigations, and it’s donors remain a mystery. Check out CREW’s blog post on why that’s problematic.
The endless corruption in Trump’s Washington can be overwhelming, but it is not inevitable. We will keep calling out problems in the White House, suggesting reforms, and providing informed analysis of some of the trickiest legal questions of the day.
Thank you for standing with us,
Noah Bookbinder
