Salon: "This isn't the end": McCarthy takes aim at Social Security, Medicare after debt ceiling deal

I have always believed that as lawmakers it is our duty to prioritize the well-being and future of the people we were elected to serve. This commitment includes safeguarding crucial programs like Social Security and Medicare which millions of Americans rely on for their health and financial security.

For decades Republican politicians have made gutting Medicare and Social Security a cornerstone of their extreme agenda. But despite recent claims to the contrary, they once again have plans to cut these programs.

After the recent debt ceiling negotiations, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made it clear Republican efforts to slash these critical programs are far from over. McCarthy openly declared the debt limit legislation was merely "the first step" towards his party's broader agenda which includes devastating cuts to Social Security and Medicare and more tax breaks for the wealthy.

I want to make one thing clear: Social Security and Medicare are not bargaining chips. They are a fundamental part of the American promise upon which many Americans, including countless Granite Staters, depend. And as long as I have the privilege of serving in Congress, I'll defend these critical programs tooth and nail.
