I come bearing good news. AB 464 has moved to the CA State Senate! This is thrilling news, we are that much closer to expanding ID and document access to all Californians. AB 464 will grant free driver’s licenses to the unhoused (right now we have free IDs but not free DLs which cost $45!!) and free vital documents to low income Californians (like birth certificates, which cost $33.75).

This is an absolutely huge step forward in ensuring that all Californians have the documents they need to live the lives they deserve. Without the cost of a $35 birth certificate, an ID will go from a total cost of $68.75 to just 35 and a driver’s license will drop from $78.75 to $45. For a family struggling to make ends meet, this is enormous. I can’t tell you how many moms have come to us looking for birth certificates for all of their children for school, health care, so many needs, which at $33.75 each is an impossible cost for them. Hopefully soon that will no longer be an issue.

More than ONE IN THREE households in California do not make a living wage and 4 in 10 households use at least 30% of their income for housing. This is why when we think about the costs of IDs and documents we MUST think beyond the homeless population- millions of Californians, and indeed millions of Americans, are struggling to make ends meet but are still lucky enough to have homes, and it is critical that we keep it that way.

AB 464 is one big way to do that, and with a little luck and hard work we’ll start getting legislation like this passed in more states across the country.

Let’s make it happen,

Kat
