John,

I wanted to take a moment to share a little more about my background and why I made the decision to run for Congress.

This is a long email, but I hope you'll read to the end, then consider adding a donation to support my campaign to keep CA‑47 blue.

You may not know this, but my beginning in activism didn't start when I founded Women for American Values and Ethics (WAVE). It goes way back.

As a student at Capistrano Valley High School, I started advocacy on issues like the environment and raising awareness about political prisoners across the globe. I joined Amnesty International for letter‑writing campaigns and even organized my classmates around these causes.

I decided to do more by forming an Amnesty International club on campus, but was told I couldn't by our school board.

I wasn’t going to give up so easily, so I presented our case to the school board directly at one of their meetings. After hearing our arguments, they gave approval and decided to recognize our group.

This ended up being my first lesson in enacting change -- that sometimes it means challenging the structures of power.

I'm in this race because the status quo in Washington isn't good enough. Powerful, corporate interests hold too much sway, and it’s too often that we see politicians fall into the traps they once campaigned against.

Congress isn’t working for the American people, and we can’t just sit on the sidelines and for something to change. If we want to secure our future, we must roll up our sleeves, get organized, and get to work.

If you’re with me, I'd be so appreciative if you could contribute $35, $50, or even $100 ahead of this month's FEC filing deadline. Any amount helps, and your donation will go a long way in showing the strength of this movement.

In unity,

Joanna
