Big Tech doesn't deserve a free pass

Hi there --

Two astounding headlines in the last week about Meta:

  1. A new investigation from the Wall Street Journal found that Instagram is connecting a vast network of online communities dedicated to sharing and accessing child-sex content. Instagram doesn’t just provide a platform for these inappropriate, even illegal activities; their algorithms actually promote them and drive interested users towards them.
  2. Facebook and Instagram are blocking news content for some Canadians to protest legislation that would require tech companies to compensate news publishers for content. Meta is doing this all while unprecedented wildfires are raging across the country, and Canadians need access to news for important updates and information

Friend, this is incredibly disturbing. It’s also deeply telling of how these companies operate — they will block posts with breaking news links while at the same time drive users to inappropriate and illegal content all in the name of profit.

When we send you an email, we typically include a link asking you to take action. But today, we just wanted you to have this important update. These are just two of the alarming stories that reaffirm for us why Accountable Tech’s work is so critical. These tech titans and surveillance behemoths do not deserve a free pass while they promote dangerous content online and undermine the free press and even people’s safety.

We’ll keep you updated on any new developments and our future campaigns. Thank you for being in this fight with us.

Thanks,
