Immediately after America avoided default for another two years, Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy went on FOX News and promised his next step would be to set up a commission to fast-track cuts to Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors.

Democrats should slam those doors in McCarthy’s face. If Republicans want to cut Social Security and Medicare, make them say so out in the open.

But while President Biden has been extremely clear, Democrats in Congress have been more circumspect. And it only takes one Democrat to play along and make McCarthy’s commission “bipartisan.”

Republicans want nothing more than to go behind closed doors with Democrats and emerge with Social Security cuts. That way, voters won’t know who to blame.

This whole debt limit “crisis” was another example of Republicans setting the terms of debate, and too many Democrats refusing to speak the truth: If the ultra-rich would pay their fair share, we can afford not only to protect Social Security, but we can EXPAND benefits and protect our retirement security for generations.

Republicans don’t actually care about the debt. They passed a $2 trillion handout to the wealthy and corporations when Donald Trump was in the White House―and they’re preparing another round of tax breaks right now.

Senate Finance Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR) put it most clearly: Republicans are “looking at a glide path to reduce benefits.” Democrats must not give them one.

We’re making it clear: Democrats must stand united and REJECT Kevin McCarthy’s debt commission. We’re on the Hill talking to our allies and ESPECIALLY the Democrats we don’t trust.
