On June 24, 2022, the day Roe v. Wade was overturned, I stood outside our state Capitol building and exclaimed what was true then, and, as of right now, still is: abortion is legal in Virginia.

When I walked into our Capitol building about a decade before Roe fell, I was the first Virginia Delegate to be pregnant while in office. Since then, I have served a total of 18 sessions in the Virginia General Assembly and made history as the first Black woman elected from Virginia to Congress. I have always been a fierce advocate for protecting abortion access and supporting new mothers, and that fight is more important now than ever before.

My name is Jennifer McClellan. Through my many years of service, I have learned firsthand that access to quality health care is out of reach for too many Virginians. And now Republicans are determined to strip away reproductive care instead of expanding it. We cannot allow that to happen.

In 2020, I helped pass landmark legislation: the Reproductive Health Protection Act. This was the first proactive expansion of abortion rights in Virginia’s history - and in the South. This legislation was passed because of the support of the Democratic majority in the House, the Senate, and the governor’s mansion.

But we are playing with different dynamics now. We now have a Governor who has stated that he would “gleefully” sign an abortion ban into law and Republican control of the House. But we have a major opportunity this year: all Senate and House seats are up for election.

It was because of the Democratic majority that we were able to preserve reproductive health in 2020, and I know we can help deliver a majority again.

I fully support Roe Your Vote Virginia in its mission: to regain a pro-choice majority in Virginia. We have protected abortion access before, and we will do it again. Will you support Roe Your Vote Virginia by rushing $25 or any amount immediately?
