Hey, John, it's Wesley again.

Going back to a place you know well is always bittersweet.

When I kicked off this campaign, I had the chance to get back to Taylorsville, where I spent the first years of my life. Taylorsville’s not a big place—we moved to Statesville when I was eight, and the fact that they had a movie theater and a Red Lobster? I figured we might as well have been in New York City compared to Taylorsville. But it was good to be back, to walk the familiar streets and breathe in that same crisp, mountain air again. Honestly, it was a little surreal—they built a new park over by the courthouse, but other than that, not much has changed since I was a kid.

As happy as it made me to see many of the old familiar landmarks still around, just like I remembered them, I also had to feel a little sad. Taylorsville hasn’t seen much growth since I left it—only a little over 2,000 people live there today, and over the last ten years, Alexander County has lost population rather than grown. As economic success and opportunity have come to the big metro areas in our state, too many communities like Taylorsville have just been left behind.

It makes my heart hurt to see it, honestly.

In a big way, that's why I'm running for State Treasurer. My parents told me that government can be a force for good when it invests in our people, and I've made it my mission to ensure that whether you live in Taylorsville or Charlotte, you and your family have equal access to the opportunities that make it possible to get ahead.

But to really make a difference, it’s going to take all of us working together. The 2024 election will be here before we know it, and the NCGOP is going to pull out all the stops to prevent us from taking back the Treasurer's office.
