Friends — Here’s the truth: A $15 an hour minimum wage isn’t enough for working class folks to afford the basic necessities of life.
The Fight for Fifteen campaign was launched back in 2012 — 11 years ago now. Since then the federal minimum wage hasn’t budged from $7.25 an hour. Meanwhile, pay for workers has only increased modestly while inflation has pushed prices higher and the cost of living has completely skyrocketed.
That’s why I’ve been vocal in my belief that in the year 2023, we need to aim higher than a $15 minimum wage. That we need to reset the conversation to revolve around a $17 minimum wage at the very least.
Throughout my career I’ve fought hard for the working class, and I won’t stop now. Economic justice will always be at the top of my agenda as I fight for the working people of Massachusetts and the entire nation in the US Senate.
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
