Dear Friends,

To prevent a catastrophic default on America, I voted for H.R. 3746, the Bipartisan Budget Agreement last week.

For weeks, extreme Republicans chose to hold Americans hostage. They demanded that we slash funding for rural communities, healthcare for veterans and so much more.

The President and Democrats rejected these extreme demands that would have devastated hard-working New Mexican families.

This bill is far from perfect. I do not support many of the changes to environmental laws and our nutrition programs. But I voted for this legislation because it prevents economic catastrophe, rejects the cruelest proposals, and protects investments for our communities.

Legislative Corner

One of the greatest investments we can make is in our children’s education. In the Committee on Education and the Workforce, I asked Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal about how Pell Grants from the Department of Education grow our economy and keep college affordable.

Bills that I supported, and the House recently passed, include:

H.R. 2796, the Promoting Opportunities for Non-Traditional Capital Formation Act, to provide small businesses in rural areas, and those affected by natural disasters. with more resources to earn capital.
H.R. 2792, the Small Entity Update Act, to help protect small businesses from overly burdensome regulations.
H.R. 2795, the Enhancing Multi-Class Share Disclosures Act, to require companies to provide more information about every class of shareholders so that corporate insiders don’t have outsized influence in governance structures.
