Last month, I shared information about the incredible progress we have made investing your tax dollars. In case you missed it, here is a summary.
Collections Update
Since November, we have collected $396,185,632 as of January 31, 2020, or 151,771 accounts. Thank you to everyone who has paid already! You can visit our Data page to find everything from a summary of collections to a spreadsheet of every dollar we collected, by account, if you would like to learn more.
Late Payments
Tax season is winding down and each year thousands of accounts remain unpaid after the January 15th due date; the reasons why are as varied as there are taxpayers. If that happens to be you or someone you know, you will notice that a 10% penalty has been added to your bill. If 2019 taxes are not paid by March 16, 2020, an additional 5% penalty will be added so please mark your calendar to avoid additional penalties. Following this penalty, taxpayers with unpaid accounts will receive additional tax notices, one via regular USPS and the second via certified mail, to remind them of the outstanding balance due.
Teaching Kids about Taxes
When I ran for office, one of my campaign commitments was to help inform our kids. Taxes and fun do not typically go together but when you add candy and games it's hard not to have fun. I created a taxation game where students take on the role of citizens and receive M&Ms as money, which are subsequently taxed by their peers. Let me tell you, when you give kids candy and then take pieces of it back as a tax, one by one, you will have some pretty humorous conversations. Below is a video of one of my visits.
If you have any questions about the delinquency process or would like me to speak at your organization, please contact my team and I, it would be our pleasure to assist you. For frequent updates and reminders, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.
