We have thrived on the freedom to make choices that best suit our lives, and I will work tirelessly to defend that freedom. Preserving Freedom and Fighting the Assault on Our Gas Appliances In February, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) proposed an “energy efficiency standard” for gas cooking products—a blatant backdoor attempt to ban gas appliances. Since the proposed ban was announced, I’ve heard from the people of Central Washington and groups across the country about how detrimental this rule would be to individual freedoms, restaurants, manufacturers, and workers whom all rely on gas stoves and the natural gas industry. Gas stoves are an integral part of the kitchen for nearly 187 million Americans, valued for their affordability and reliability—and homes equipped with natural gas appliances save families up to $1,068 annually compared to their all-electric counterparts. Recognizing the gravity of this situation, I introduced legislation this week that prevents the Biden Administration from enacting any standard that would effectively ban gas stoves. I also co-sponsored an additional piece of legislation this week, the Save Our Gas Stoves Act, which will stop the DOE from dictating the type of cooktop appliance Americans use in their home. The fight against the ban on gas stoves extends far beyond a mere debate on energy sources or the means of cooking; it is about preserving our freedoms and defending the choices that make our households uniquely American. Our gas stoves represent the principles of choice, affordability, and reliability that have made America the land of opportunity. We have thrived on the freedom to make choices that best suit our lives, and I will work tirelessly to defend that freedom. Read My Op-Ed in The Hill Reaffirming My Commitment to Protecting Hydropower Production I am honored to have received the Defender of Hydropower Award this week from the National Hydropower Association. Defending the Snake River Dams has long been a priority of mine, and it is crucial that we ensure hydropower remains an essential part of Central Washington's all-of-the-above energy approach. The Four Lower Snake River Dams are integral to flood control, navigation, irrigation, agriculture, and recreation in Central Washington and throughout the Pacific Northwest. We also know the critical infrastructure of the Snake River Dams provides clean, renewable, safe, and affordable energy for our homes and businesses, and the best and latest science affirms we should continue to utilize them. I would like to thank the National Hydropower Association for recognizing me for this award and reaffirm my commitment to prioritizing hydropower. I look forward to continuing to work towards effective, science-based solutions to maintain our powerful hydroelectric dams. Read My Op-Ed with Rep. McMorris Rodgers in the Union-Bulletin Be Prepared for Wildfire Season As wildfire season approaches, it is important to remain vigilant and stay safe. While the causes of wildfires can be unpredictable, there are ways to reduce the risks to our lands for the safety of our families, local businesses, and agricultural producers. To help prevent wildfires, you should: Be aware of what is around your home, such as natural debris like pine needles and fallen leaves. Clean your roofs and gutters. By maintaining a clean roof, your house is more likely to survive a wildfire. Remove all dead plants near your property. Change the vent screens in your house and make sure you have a fine mesh screen for any outside vent. If you own firewood, make sure it is either disposed of or is stored away from your property. During the fire season, be aware of what outdoor furniture you have. Remember, it's important to follow the guidance of local authorities and stay updated on the latest information regarding wildfires in your area. Stay safe!
