Friend,

Congressional Republicans’ brinkmanship over the debt ceiling just put our economy on the brink of calamity. This was a completely manufactured crisis staged with reckless disregard for both the American people and the national economy..

Fortunately, the administration and its supporters in Congress were able to negotiate a deal that saved our country from facing a devastating default.

But make no mistake: This is no way to govern.

Here’s what happened: Republican leaders initially told the President and Democratic colleagues that if we did not agree to their extreme budget proposals – some of which included cuts to Social Security, veterans’ health care, food assistance for infants, and more – then they would refuse to raise the nation’s debt ceiling, causing our country to default on its debts. Refusing to pay your bills for money you have already spent is not how you plan your future spending. One is a debt owed. The other a budget planned.

A national default would have caused economic chaos the likes of which we’ve never seen. One economic estimate put the likely number of American jobs lost at 2 million.

Fortunately, after weeks of negotiations, President Biden and his team were able to broker a deal which prevented default and ensured the Republicans’ most traumatic budget cuts would not become reality. And my colleagues and I in Congress supported that deal.

But the fact that the full faith and credit of the United States was able to be held ransom by a faction of extremists is unacceptable. To stop repetition of this reckless approach, the debt ceiling must be eliminated once and for all.

With this fiasco behind us, I’m ready to turn the page, get back to business, and address the urgent challenges that our country is facing. As Congress gets back to work, will you take my June Priorities Survey to help my team make progress in the weeks and months ahead?

It’s time to get back to governing responsibly and solving problems for the people. Thanks for reading and taking my June survey.

Sincerely,

Dick
