Congressman Krishnamoorthi presents officials from Elk Grove Village with $500,000 in federal funding he secured for the Village’s recovery program.

Last weekend, I was proud to join Mayor Craig Johnson and other officials from Elk Grove Village to celebrate the $500,000 in federal funding I secured for the Elk Grove Village Cares Program while also commemorating the initiative’s fifth anniversary. Launched in 2018 by the Elk Grove Village Police Department, Elk Grove Village Cares is an innovative effort to address opioid addiction in the community by expanding access to the overdose-reversing medication Narcan by equipping the village’s first responders with it and also assisting individuals suffering from addiction. Under the program, individuals seeking help for their substance issues can go to the police department without fear of arrest, and receive assistance from officers in connecting them with treatment services.
As part of Sunday’s event, I was glad to join Mayor Johnson and local leaders in announcing the expansion of Elk Grove Village Cares through two new initiatives. First, the police department will now host a Narcan-dispensing machine in its lobby, providing free public access to doses of the medication 24 hours a day. Secondly, with the funding I was able to secure, the program will be expanding to serve community members between the ages of 12 and 17 years old. While Elk Grove Village Cares has provided support to those over the age of 18 since its inception, the new initiative will allow the Elk Grove Village Police Department to assist young people in overcoming their opioid addictions. You can read more about Sunday’s celebration and the difference Elk Grove Village Cares is making in the community here and here.

This week, I joined with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Chairman Mike Gallagher and other members of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre in a congressional roundtable. We were also honored to welcome democracy and human rights activists Wei Jingsheng and Hengping “Henry” Li, who have dedicated their lives to combating the rise of oppression by the CCP.
On June 4th, 1989 the CCP launched a military crackdown, attacking students protesting for democracy and human rights in Tiananmen Square. As the CCP’s tanks began to leave the site of the massacre the next day, a single unidentified man stood in their path. People had a choice that day: to stand with the man who stood up to power, or to stand with that tank, and the brutal Chinese Communist Party which sought to quash the freedom of the Chinese people. Many, including some of our guests at Monday’s event, stood defiantly with that man, and many of them endured exile or far worse for defying the CCP. Others sided with the tank and the political regime that had unleashed it on peaceful protesters. On Monday, my colleagues and I reaffirmed our commitment to freedom, democracy, human rights, and standing up to the CCP, just as that brave man did in Tiananmen Square 34 years ago.

On Sunday, I also joined CNN’s Jim Acosta to discuss the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and the CCP in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, where Chinese warships have risked dangerous collisions with American and Canadian vessels in international waters as a means of intimidation, violating internationally-recognized rights of navigation. I strongly agree with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin that the CCP needs to end this reckless, escalatory behavior. I firmly believe that there is room to work together with the People’s Republic of China on issues of international and domestic importance, but we must also make clear that the United States and our democratic allies will not be intimidated.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi stands with the Congressional Art Competition winner from Illinois’s Eighth Congressional District Anjali Gonzalez in front of her painting, “Luna in the Sun.”

Last month, I had the privilege of highlighting three incredible students from our district as part of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition. Since 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated in the competition. This year’s entries were among the most talented I have ever seen and considered for our district’s award. Our second and third place finishers, Elijah Guthrie and Erin Cantwell, demonstrated their artistic talents with “Three Chairs” and “Swimming with the Sharks.” Our winner, 10th grader Anjali Gonzalez from Hoffman Estates High School, will have the honor of having her entry, “Luna in the Sun”, displayed for tens of thousands of Members, staff, and visitors to see in the U.S. Capitol for the next year. I look forward to reconnecting with Anjali later this year when she visits Washington, D.C. to see her art on display. I want to thank everyone who participated in this year’s competition, and I look forward to next year’s entries.
