After a successful session in passing legislation to complete the protection of girl and women athletes, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) is considering a proposal to allow boys on girls’ volleyball teams in K-12 sports. Without any further explanation, this proposal appears to be a violation of the Save Girls Sports Law, HB 25 that was passed in 2021.

The UIL will hold a meeting for the Standing Committee on Athletics Tuesday June 13, 2023 at 9:30a.m. in Round Rock, Texas at the Austin Marriott 2600 La Frontera Blvd. On the agenda, the committee has a choice between a good policy and a bad policy. Agenda item 1 (i) is “a proposal to allow boys to participate on the girls’ volleyball team”. This would obviously destroy girls’ opportunities in volleyball and place them at great risk for harm. Recently, a high school volleyball player from North Carolina shared her experience of suffering from a concussion and neck injuries after having a ball spiked in her face by a boy playing on the girls volleyball team.

But, the committee will also consider the appropriate option of creating volleyball teams based on “sex”. Agenda item 1(h) is “a proposal to add boys’ volleyball as a UIL sanctioned activity”. The UIL should consider this option as it will protect female athletes and give them a fair opportunity to compete as intended by Title IX and the Texas law HB 25. The board must reject the obviously unfair proposal that allows boys on girls’ volleyball teams.

While it is unclear why the UIL committee is making the proposal to allow boys on girls’ volleyball teams, we need to be watchful and aware to make sure that there is no bad intent to harm female athletes. You can watch the discussion of the policy here.

Please send a message to the officials at UIL.
