Nonprofit Hospitals Cash Reserves Trend

In their Datawatch paper in the June 2023 issue, Derek Jenkins and
Vivian Ho use the National Academy of State Health Policy Hospital Cost
Tool to compare changes in hospital profits with
<[link removed]>changes
in hospitals' charity care and cash reserves
<[link removed]>
between 2012 and 2019.

Mean hospital profits grew from 2012 to 2019, they report, "but this
increase was not associated with the provision of more charity care by
nonprofit hospitals, even though their cash reserve balances increased."


Interestingly, Jenkins and Ho also find that an increase in profit was
associated with an increase in charity care for for-profit hospitals,
even though charity care is not required for them. "This may be because
spending on charity care is tax deductible," they posit.
