We are just over two weeks away from the first anniversary of the Supreme Court’s devastating decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and strip millions of women of their bodily autonomy.

This moment remains incredibly painful for all of us who defend and work to regain reproductive rights nationwide.

Nearly a year later, it’s so important that we continue to strengthen our resolve. We cannot allow ourselves to lose hope or let extremists diminish our power. 

Republican-controlled states have wasted no time to enact total and highly restrictive abortion bans. Most abortions are banned in 14 states. Georgia outlaws abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, before many women know they are even pregnant. Nebraska and North Carolina have passed bills that prohibit the procedure after 12 weeks of pregnancy. Arizona, Florida and Utah ban abortion ranging from 15 to 20 weeks of pregnancy.

I am thankful that Illinois’ Constitution protects abortion, and in January our state legislature passed a law that shields anyone seeking or providing abortions in our state from laws in other states.

Now, I am more determined than ever to prevent the GOP from building on their House majority and taking control of the Senate so they can further erode our rights. Our unity and collective action now and in the weeks and months ahead are crucial.
