FOREVER ORGANIZING
The California Democratic Party’s Organizing Department is excited to highlight the stories of our staff members who are passionate about making a difference throughout our state. From leading our organizing efforts to connecting with local community leaders, our organizing team is working in every corner of California to ensure we continue to elect Democrats up and down the ballot.
IN THE FIELD
California Democrats from across the state took action at our 2023 CADEM Convention in Los Angeles. 500 volunteers came together to bundle essential items and text young voters.
In just under an hour, volunteers bundled 4,000 personal kits that were donated to the Downtown Women’s Center [[link removed]] in Los Angeles, the only center focused exclusively on serving and empowering women experiencing homelessness and formerly homeless women. We were able to deliver over 120 boxes of bundled items to the Center thanks to Good Karma LA [[link removed]] , a nonprofit organization that provides hot meals, clothing, and resources to those most in need on Skid Row.
In addition to the service action, volunteers texted young Democrats a petition and call to take action against gun violence. In partnership with the California Young Democrats, we sent almost 900,000 texts to voters across the state - allowing us to connect with pivotal voters and recruit new volunteers.
Thank you to everyone who participated in our organizing actions and to the Downtown Women’s Center, Good Karma LA, and the California Young Democrats for partnering with us in becoming a party of action. A special thank you to Attorney General Rob Bonta who sponsored lunch for all volunteers who took part in our organizing work.

MEET THE INTERNS
The California Democratic Party is investing in a program to turn out young voters. Six young organizers from across the state will help us reach young people throughout the summer by holding events focussed on voter registration, phonebanks, and volunteer recruitment:
-Christopher Gill, Sacramento County
-Jill Morton, San Joaquin County
-Mary Idowu, Madera County
-Arianna Lema, Kern County
-Alvina Shea, Los Angeles County
-Christian Figueroa, Los Angeles County
Our Youth Vote Interns are driving discussions and organizing on some of the most important issues facing young people today including racial equity, college affordability, safer gun laws, and taking action against climate change. By engaging young voters, CADEM will help build a new generation of leaders and long-term Democratic voters.

I'm Michael, the youngest City Council Member in Imperial County history and one of the youngest public officials in California. In 2022, I graduated from Calipatria High School and today, I’m currently a student at Imperial Valley College, studying Political Science and Global Studies. I plan to transfer to SDSU Imperial Valley Campus to study Public Administration.
My interest in government and politics started when I was just 14 years old, volunteering for a local irrigation district election. Through this experience, I had the opportunity to meet government officials and gain a deeper understanding of how our government works. As I grew older, I knew I wanted to make a difference in my community and become a voice for change.
Recently, I had the honor of attending President Biden's State of the Union Address, where his message of compassion and empathy deeply resonated with me. He spoke about issues such as substance abuse and drug addiction, which personally impacted my family when my dad lost his battle with substance abuse disorder in 2016. As Democrats, we believe in prioritizing rehabilitation over incarceration. Through these values, I remain committed to ensuring that we fight for a more fair and just California for communities who suffer from limited resources because of the color of their skin or the zip code they live in.
The President also addressed the devastating effects of COVID-19, which hit close to home for me when my mom passed away from the virus last January. She had previously suffered from a neurological disorder, and her passing was a great loss to me and my family. However, the values my mom instilled in her family of love, acceptance, and compassion continue to inspire me and I am dedicated to giving back and helping others in her memory.
Growing up, my family taught me the importance of valuing people and treating everyone with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or beliefs. These values are at the core of why I am a Democrat and why I believe Democrats should be in office. I'm honored to have been recently elected as the Imperial County Democratic Party's Vice Chair, and I'm excited to take on new responsibilities and make a positive impact in my community.
