Espaillat, García Urge Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Redesignation for Venezuelan Nationals Currently Residing in the United States

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representatives Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) sent a letter to President Joe Biden, U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Ur Jaddou urging the Biden administration to expeditiously utilize its statutory authority to redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelan nationals who have been continuously residing or physically present in the United States since May 2023.

“Venezuela is currently in the midst of an unprecedented social, economic, and humanitarian collapse that has resulted in over 7 million Venezuelans fleeing the country since 2015,” stated the Members.

“The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has categorized the situation in Venezuela as the ‘largest external displacement crisis in the world,’ second only to Ukraine. These immigrant families have continually fled escalating violence, economic insecurity, malnutrition, and absences of medicine and essential services in Venezuela, brought about by what economists from Harvard University and the International Monetary Fund have described as the ‘single largest economic collapse outside of war in [over 40] years,” they continued.

“In light of this ongoing reality, our letter encourages the administration to protect displaced Venezuelan families residing in the U.S. by redesignating Venezuela for Temporary Protected Status,” the Members concluded.

Espaillat y García instan a que se reasigne el Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS) para los ciudadanos venezolanos que actualmente residen en los Estados Unidos

WASHINGTON, DC – Hoy, los congresistas Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) y Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) enviaron una carta al presidente Joe Biden; al secretario del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de los Estados Unidos (DHS), Alejandro Mayorkas; y a la directora del Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de los Estados Unidos (USCIS), Ur Jaddou, instando a la Administración Biden a utilizar de manera expedita su autoridad estatutaria para reasignar el Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS) a los ciudadanos venezolanos que han estado residiendo continuamente o estado físicamente presentes en los Estados Unidos desde mayo de 2023.

“Venezuela se encuentra actualmente en medio de un colapso social, económico y humanitario sin precedentes que ha provocado que más de 7 millones de venezolanos hayan huido del país desde 2015”, afirmaron los congresistas.

“El Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (ACNUR) ha categorizado la situación en Venezuela como la ‘crisis de desplazamiento externo más grande del mundo’, solo superada por Ucrania. Estas familias inmigrantes han huido continuamente de la escalada de violencia, la inseguridad económica, la desnutrición y la ausencia de medicamentos y servicios esenciales en Venezuela, provocada por lo que los economistas de la Universidad de Harvard y el Fondo Monetario Internacional han descrito como el "colapso económico más grande fuera de la guerra en [más de 40] años”, agregaron.

“A la luz de esta realidad en curso, nuestra carta exhorta a la Administración a proteger a las familias venezolanas desplazadas que residen en los EE.UU. al reasignar a Venezuela el Estatus de Protección Temporal”, concluyeron los miembros del Congreso.
