John,
36,000 Americans are killed by guns each year -- nearly 1,500 of those in my state of Georgia alone. And my home county of DeKalb has 15 gun deaths for every 100,000 people on average, every year. This is completely unacceptable.
Why do we allow this to happen year after year? Frankly, it’s because too many of our leaders are terrified of the gun lobby and National Rifle Association (NRA).
Well, I’m not, John. I am proud of my F-rating from the NRA, and what I’m working on now will probably turn that into an F-. I am teaming up with Elizabeth Warren in the Senate to fight for gun reform.
John, I truly believe that our nation needs common-sense reforms to end this epidemic of gun violence. Here are a few we have in mind:
-
Universal background checks
-
Ban military-style assault weapons
-
Ban bulk gun purchases
-
Provide $100 million in annual funding for federal research into gun violence
-
Hold gun manufacturers responsible for the harms their guns cause
-
& much, much more
I encourage you to follow along on this critical issue. It’s going to require grassroots momentum to overcome the money and power of the NRA, but I know we can get it done.
In solidarity,
Hank
