[link removed] [[link removed]] Hey John,
We’re having a busy start to the month with our experts tackling a lot of developments in the news, so we’ll get right down to business.
Donald Trump was federally indicted related to classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. While we wait for his court appearance next week, when we will see the full charges, you can read our explainer about what he may be charged with (which seems to map closely with the actual charges). [[link removed]] The bottom line: This indictment is not about some obscure rules, it’s about national security, which Trump endangered. It’s about Trump putting his own interests over the safety of the American people.
According to a new CREW analysis of his tax returns, Trump made $82.5 million from the UK and Ireland while president [[link removed]] —all from extraordinary conflicts of interest. That's more than half of Trump's total foreign income during the presidency, which was up to a staggering $160 million.
Our experts spoke to the Daily Beast and The Lever about how Ron DeSantis is stretching election laws as far as they will go [[link removed]] and how his super PAC is pushing boundaries of campaign finance laws. [[link removed]]
CREW Senior Vice President and Chief Counsel Donald Sherman published a new op-ed in the Nevada Independent [[link removed]] explaining a new Nevada bill that would criminalize serving as a fake presidential elector and adds another tool to hold people accountable. Sherman was interviewed for the American Constitution Society’s Broken Law Podcast to discuss the biggest legal developments of 2023 so far. [[link removed]]
The PGA tour merger with Saudi-Backed golf league LIV [[link removed]] was announced Tuesday, and CREW led the charge to remind people that LIV hosted several golf tournaments at Trump properties and is backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund—which invested $2 billion in Jared Kushner's private equity firm. We’ve been on top of Trump and Kushner’s dealings and glaring conflicts of interests with Saudi Arabia for years, including suing over Trump and White House officials appearing to violate record preservation laws during meetings with Saudis [[link removed]] in 2019.
If you thought our work was done, it’s just beginning. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem ordered National Guard troops to the border again—and the last time she did that, CREW found that it cost $1.4 million. [[link removed]'s%20request%20for%20assistance] It wasn't exactly a critical mission either, and the troops often had nothing to do. We’re also continuing to push for answers and accountability [[link removed]] from Harlan Crow and Clarence Thomas, and will be testifying at an upcoming Supreme Court ethics hearing.
As we learn more about Trump’s federal indictment, we’ll be sure to keep you updated. If you’re keeping up with our work, we hope you’ll consider making a contribution to help us continue keeping up our work across so many important ongoing issues. [[link removed]] We couldn’t do it without supporters like you.
