JUMPING INTO JUNE
Last month was one of coming together to serve the community. We kicked off the month at the inaugural Stronger Together Against Hate New York United Summit, where Board Member Dr. Debbie Almontaser spoke as a panelist on finding ways to prevent hate within our communities.
In honor of Mental Health awareness month, the Muslim Women's Empowerment Program had a fabulous Muslim Women’s Wellness Day! It included a rejuvenating yoga and meditation session with trainer Ngone Mbaye, followed by lunch, a plate and mug painting art session, and a group storytelling event. We also honored Djeneba Toure-Diaby for her dedication to the Muslim Women's Empowerment and Community leadership, congratulations!
We also held a Mens and Womens Immigrants Rights Workshop at Hadrath Shahjalal Mosque in Astoria, Queens, and We Are Not Afraid Community Center in Upper Manhattan where participants engaged in sessions to educate them on their rights.
MCN also participated at Crossroads Juvenile Center where they have been engaging in diversity education workshops and empowering incarcerated Muslim Youth. These workshops have been incredible opportunity for us to speak with incarcerated youth who are looking for meaningful futures for themselves. A big shout out to our MYNYC Bridge mentor, Abdul Sankara for making the connection.
We also went to City hall to participate in the New York City Council Speaker's Roundtable for Muslims in advance of Muslim Day at City Hall. Muslim Day at City Hall, organized by our partners at Emgage NY, is an opportunity for the Muslim community to advocate for the needs of our community. We pushed the City Council on passing Resolution 476 to allow our students to learn about the religiously diverse communities they interact with daily!
We were then at City Hall to celebrate Muslim Day!
We also served 100+ meals at the Church of Holy Trinity, a true show of interfaith solidarity. This time, we brought our MYNYC youth to the session as a means for them to volunteer.
As always, this work is made possible by our incredible funders and donors. It's through your vision for a society where our children may grow in solidarity with their neighbors, fight for justice, and equality, that makes this work possible.
Please be kind to continue supporting this work and allow for a tax-deductible and zakat eligible donation to this cause.
With Gratitude,
The MCN Team
