Dear John,
In June 2020, we challenged Minnesota’s rules governing copper mining, arguing that outdated Minnesota mining rules are inadequate to protect the Boundary Waters and its headwaters from sulfide-ore copper mining. Last week, the DNR determined that their rules are inadequate to protect the Boundary Waters from the toxic noise and light pollution inherent to sulfide-ore copper mining. While we are encouraged that the DNR recognizes that the existing rules are not adequate to protect the Boundary Waters, we have concerns about the scope of the review as the DNR has laid it out. On May 11, the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a hearing on Rep. Stauber’s two bills attacking the Boundary Waters. The House majority was allotted three witnesses, while the minority was able to invite one – Save the Boundary Waters’ very own National Campaign Chair Becky Rom!
A particular highlight was when Ranking Member Representative Ocasio-Cortez pressed for transparency from one of the witnesses pressing to undo Boundary Waters protections: former Minnesota State Senator Tom Bakk about his current gig as a lobbyist for big tobacco and the very company seeking to mine in the Boundary Waters watershed - Twin Metals.
