🇧🇷 Brazil’s top court sentenced former president Fernando Collor de Mello to prison for “passive corruption and money laundering” during his time as senator.

🇮🇹 European authorities arrested 31 people in Italy, Belgium, and Germany as part of a joint operation targeting the 'Ndrangheta crime group. 

🇧🇦 Bosnia and Herzegovina authorities seized 124 kilograms of cocaine concealed in packages of bananas and mistakenly delivered to a trade company that had neither ordered the cocaine nor the bananas. 

🍌 Fruit & Coke: Drugs are often smuggled in refrigerated containers of fruit because it’s hard for port officials to thoroughly inspect them without the risk of spoiling tons of produce. Read more in this 2019 investigation.

🇧🇷 Brazilian banks will require the country's meat producers to implement environmental protection measures on suppliers who raise cattle in the Amazon.

The move is designed to get major industries to help fight deforestation by leveraging access to lines of credit.

EVENTS & AWARDS

🏆 OCCRP Editor in Chief Miranda Patrucic will receive the Guardian Award from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. The prize is given to journalists "whose determination, perseverance and commitment to the truth has contributed significantly to the fight against fraud."

🗓️ Miranda will also be speaking at the Oslo Freedom Forum, a global conference that focuses on human rights and democracy. This year's forum will be held in Oslo, Norway on June 14. 

🗓️ OCCRP Assistant Product Manager Ezana Ćeman will moderate a panel at the Mixer x Point Conference in Sarajevo, BiH with local journalists from from BIRN, IRL Macedonia, and Slidstvo.Info.
