The Department of Justice and Special Counsel Jack Smith just indicted
former President Donald J. Trump on federal charges over his mishandling
of classified material and his potential obstruction of the investigation.

Donald Trump is more dangerous now than ever, and he will repeatedly lash
out at his enemies, exhort his followers, and lie about why he has been
indicted. We can expect his usual claims about “witch hunts,” his
complaints of unfairness and victimization, and his counter attacks
against others. And, as he just demonstrated with his first attack ad of
the presidential campaign, I will be at the top of his list.

Listen, John,
I’ll have more to say in the coming days about Trump’s indictment as we
learn more. But this is not the only legal exposure he’s facing:

Trump is already under indictment in Manhattan on criminal charges
stemming from hush money payments he made to a porn star.

Trump is under investigation in Georgia over his scheme to overturn the
election.

And Trump is also under federal investigation for his role in the January
6th attack on the Capitol, and his efforts to overturn the election he
lost.

And there’s absolutely no doubt that Trump – as the frontrunner for the
Republican nomination – will weaponize this indictment for his political
gain. Just like he did with his impeachments. Because winning the
presidency may be the only way he hopes to avoid going to jail.

It’s truly a perilous moment for our democracy, which Trump continues to
attack and undermine.
