Folks,
Today, the Supreme Court handed down a decision that could be seismic in Alabama and across the South. In a 5-4 decision, they struck down the Alabama Republican Party’s illegal and outright discriminatory attempt to gerrymander Black voters into one Congressional seat.
And because of that decision, the Cook Political Report just moved 4 solid Republican seats to “toss-ups” throughout the South - 2 in Alabama and 2 in Louisiana.
Talk about being on the right side of history. This is a win for better representation in the South. It is a win for democracy.
Extremist Republicans in South Carolina, Georgia, and other states with racial gerrymandering should be put on notice. Despite its conservative tilt, the Supreme Court is ready to enforce some of the key voting provisions in the 1965 Voting Rights Act and end their egregious practice of packing Black voters into single Congressional districts.
This could have ripple effects as early as next year. Right now, we’ve got four new tight races alone that we can focus on this cycle. But more could very well open up in the wake of this decision.
So I’m fired up today. I’m fired up because American democracy just received one heck of a win. And I’m fired up because the change we’ve been seeking all these years just became a whole lot clearer.
This is what happens when every voice is able to be heard, and when representation is more equal. We know we have a lot of work to do to make this change possible. But here at Right Side of History, we’ll be fighting hard to make that change happen. I’d appreciate it if you pitch in today and help us make a real difference in reshaping politics in the South and in races that matter around the country.
