Dear friend,

On June 6, the Nova Kakhovka dam was destroyed, triggering a large-scale
humanitarian disaster across southern Ukraine.

As thousands evacuate from downstream communities, Mercy Corps is deeply
concerned about increased dangers to civilians — particularly elderly and
people with disabilities who remain stranded in high waters.

Right now, our teams are on the scene in Odesa and Mykolaiv, supporting
local organizations providing humanitarian assistance in areas impacted by
the catastrophic flooding following the dam break.

We recently received this report from Samir Chalhoub, Mercy Corps Regional
Policy & Advocacy Advisor for Ukraine:

"The dangers to civilians in the flooded areas are mounting by the
hour. As we speak with our partners in Kherson, we are hearing stories
of elderly people and people with disabilities stuck in high waters,
unable to escape. There is no potable water, with contamination
putting the most vulnerable at high risk of health complications."

Kakhovka was one of Ukraine’s largest energy facilities, holding water
equivalent to the size of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Approximately
700,000 people across the region rely on water from the reservoir.

Mercy Corps has been working in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale
war in February 2022, reaching more than 2 million people alongside our
local partners. We will continue to respond to this latest crisis and meet
critical needs of people affected by the destruction of the dam.

Your gift to Mercy Corps will be used where most needed — in places like
Ukraine and in communities facing crises around the globe. [ [link removed] ]Please rush

We will keep you updated on our response as the situation develops. Thank
you as always for your extraordinary support.
