Calling all students across Maryland's Eighth District!

I write to invite high school and college students in the Eighth District to an upcoming virtual Youth Town Hall I'm hosting on Monday, June 12 at 7:30 p.m. I'm excited to meet some of my youngest constituents and answer some of your most pressing policy questions. Be sure to register and submit your questions in advance here to ensure you can participate!

As your representative, I strive to legislate your priorities in Congress: whether that's fighting for strong gun safety legislation, climate rescue or mental health access. Did you know that my office can also connect you with resources to help you through high school and college?

Read on to learn about my internship program, the Congressional App Challenge, nominations to our nation's service academies and much more.

Remember that you can always stay updated with the latest from my office on TwitterFacebook, Instagram and my website. If you need help with a federal agency and want to request my assistance, please complete the online request form here, and my District Office will be in touch.

All Best,

My internship program allows students to gain experience working for a congressional office. Interns support my Washington, D.C. and Rockville district office teams by answering constituent calls, performing research, attending briefings and much more. High school students, college students and recent graduates are encouraged to apply for an internship through my website. The deadline to apply for an internship for the Fall 2023 session is July 7, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.

The Congressional App Challenge

The annual Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide event engaging student creativity and encouraging participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. The Challenge encourages students to learn to code by creating and exhibiting their software application for mobile, tablet or computer devices on a platform of their choice. Students can pre-register themselves or their teams for the App Challenge, and when the 2023 App Challenge officially launches on June 15, they will be automatically entered into the competition.

Students may compete as individuals or in teams of up to four (at least two teammates must live or attend school in Maryland's Eighth Congressional District). The winning app will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives' website, the Congressional App Challenge website, and displayed in a U.S. Capitol exhibit. Winning students are also invited to attend a Capitol Hill Reception to celebrate their achievement. More information about the Congressional App Competition is available on my website and the Congressional App Challenge website.

The Congressional Art Competition

"The Memory Quilt: Pieces of Myself" by Olivia Ensign, MD-08 winner of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition

The Congressional Art Competition recognizes and promotes the artistic expression of high school students across America. Each year, members of the House of Representatives sponsor the competition in their districts, with winners showcased in a stunning display in the U.S. Capitol Building.

Students entering the MD-08 competition must live in Maryland’s Eighth Congressional District and are permitted to submit one piece of artwork. Artists are encouraged to submit pieces from a range of mediums, including painting, drawing, print, mixed media, collage, computer-generated art, photography or any other two dimensional medium.

My annual competition typically launches in early February, with submissions due mid-March. Full details are available on my website here.

All submissions received will be displayed in a virtual gallery. You can check out our 2023 virtual gallery here and below.

The Congressional Award Program

The Congressional Award recognizes young Americans’ efforts to reach their full potential through community service, character development, and fitness goals. Participants will receive a workbook with guidance on how to track progress within four program areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration. Participants select goals and activities that count hours toward each of the four program areas. Participants can earn varying levels of the award based on how many hours they complete. The program is open to all youth ages 14 to 24 regardless of ability, circumstance, or socioeconomic status. You can register for the Congressional Award program here.

Nominations to U.S. Service Academies
