This is incredible news, team: The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Black voters in the case Allen v. Milligan, and affirmed the strength of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act!
The Voting Rights Act (VRA) is considered the crown jewel of the Civil Rights Movement. This legislative accomplishment moved us closer to achieving equal treatment under the law, and has been repeatedly reauthorized by overwhelming bipartisan majorities in Congress, including a 98-0 vote in the Senate to reauthorize it most recently, in 2006.
But recently, the Voting Rights Act has come under attack. Ten years ago, the Court’s ruling in Shelby County dismantled portions of the VRA, effectively nullifying Section 5. Section 5 was a critical tool to hold states accountable, specifically states with a history of racial discrimination. Under Section 5, these states needed to receive preclearance before passing new election laws. Eliminating this check in the disastrous Shelby County ruling opened the door for a new wave of voter suppression laws across the country.
In Allen v. Milligan, Alabama Republicans asked the Court to further undermine the VRA by invalidating provisions that prevent lawmakers from diluting the political power of communities of color. By rejecting these arguments, today’s ruling helps ensure that the Voting Rights Act will continue to serve as an important tool to make our democracy fairer.
Today’s ruling represents a significant and sweeping victory for our democracy, but we must not rest. This is not the end of our fight against voter suppression. Too many politicians across the country are determined to hold on to unearned power by restricting and undermining the right to vote.
That’s why the NDRC is committing to continuing our democracy-saving work across the country. Will you donate today to help us keep fighting?
