John,
Pride month is a time to celebrate and embrace what makes us unique. It’s a time to lift up the LGBTQ+ people in our lives. And it’s a time to commit ourselves to ensuring that all Americans are treated equally — regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
But on Tuesday, the Human Rights Campaign declared a “state of emergency” for LGBTQ+ Americans. More than 75 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been signed into law in states across the country this year alone, including Georgia.
As Republican state governments continue to impose restrictions on LGBTQ+ Americans, and as the ultraconservative Supreme Court has signaled that marriage equality could be on the chopping block, I’m going to keep fighting for equality, equity, and justice. It’s not just our principles that are on the line — it’s our family, friends, and neighbors.
I’m proud of the work we’re doing to preserve our progress and expand our rights in the future, but we face an uphill climb against state governments who are imposing hurtful policies. I invite you to do whatever you can this month — and any other time — to make the people around you feel seen, included, and valued.
Happy Pride,
Hank Johnson
