Supporter, As an American, I’m horrified by the future that right-wing authoritarians want to create, and as a grandma, I’m especially troubled by the Far Right’s desire to control and censor what my grandkids can learn in school. That’s why I’m proud to be part of a new campaign People For is launching to combat this censorship: Grandparents For Truth. My family – much like a growing number of American families – is a gorgeous mix of hues and faiths and expressions of love – so this fight for me is personal. But it’s also the fight for our country. What our kids learn fundamentally shapes who they become as adults – and the society in which we live. Learning about the lived experiences of Black and brown communities or of LGBTQ+ people can foster a deeper understanding and respect for difference. But far-right extremists see any curriculum that covers these topics as a threat that must be banned from our classrooms and libraries. We know from history that such extreme measures are hallmarks of authoritarianism and should be resoundingly rejected. My grandchildren – and all our children – deserve an honest and accurate education that enables them to learn from the past and prepares them for the future. To deny them these learning opportunities does a disservice to them, and to our nation as a whole. Despite public opposition to these bans, authoritarian groups like Moms for Liberty and their allied politicians are using them to build power in divisive and destructive ways. They are harassing and threatening teachers and passing laws designed to intimidate and limit teaching to content approved by right-wing ideologues. The best way to counter these attacks is to build a multigenerational, multiracial movement in support of young people’s freedom to read and freedom to learn. Grandparents For Truth will mobilize the elders in our community – the generation who has seen the tragic backlashes that occur any time this country begins to make any progress toward justice – and it will mobilize anyone with a heartfelt commitment to the wellbeing of our children. In partnership with allies of all ages and communities, we will defeat this generation’s book-banners, censors, and authoritarians. Grandparents For Truth members will learn how to participate at local school board meetings, organize in their hometowns against book bans and censorship, and contact their lawmakers to promote the freedom to teach and learn. Members will also get resources to join in other efforts to promote our shared values at the local, state, and national level. Please sign up today to join this movement and encourage your friends, family, and loved ones – of all ages – to do the same. Thanks for all that you do, Marge Baker
