America's most notorious hate leaders are dining with ex-Presidents and hobnobbing with members of Congress. Friend, Our latest Year in Hate and Extremism report documented 1,225 active hate and antigovernment extremist groups in the United States. One big takeaway: Hate has gone mainstream in America. Please make a gift today to help fight back against hate, dismantle white supremacy and advance the human rights of all people. We have entered an era where America’s most notorious hate leaders are dining with ex-presidents, hobnobbing with members of Congress and spreading their vile rhetoric on America’s most-watched cable news channel. It’s no surprise that party leaders are adopting an attitude of hostility and violence.
Increasingly, hate groups are embracing political violence, from the January 6 insurrection to the plot to kidnap Michigan’s governor, from politically motivated shootings targeting Democratic elected officials in New Mexico to the assault rifle-wielding men “monitoring” polling locations or marching outside the homes of public health officials. The Proud Boys, whose chapters have grown considerably since the group participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection, targeted more than 40 LGBTQ+ events in 2022. These dangerous groups are emboldened, and their activities are becoming widespread and salient. All of us are impacted by the reverberating consequences of hate and hate violence, which is why it’s so important for each of us to speak out and act against hate, extremism, and political violence. Friend, the updated Hate Map below shows how close these potentially violent groups may be operating near you. Recent intelligence reports, assessments and congressional testimony from the FBI and Department of Homeland Security have concluded the two most lethal elements of today’s domestic terrorism threat are racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists and anti-government or anti-authority extremists. These radicalized, extremist movements are fueling not only horrific individual acts of terror and violence — like the murder of 10 people out shopping at a supermarket in Buffalo last May — but a determined assault on American democracy itself. This is an“all-hands-on-deck” moment for America and for the Southern Poverty Law Center. The work of civil rights leaders and sacrifices of generations of freedom fighters is not done. Our generation must continue to confront white supremacy and secure dignity and liberation for all. Please make a special gift today to join us in stamping out hate, dismantling white supremacy and advancing the human rights of all people. Thank you for all that you do for our movement. We are so grateful to have you by our side. In solidarity, The Southern Poverty Law Center
