Losing Democracy: Troubling Trends in Individual Giving

This edition of the Nonprofit Quarterly focuses on the disappearance of small and medium-sized donors and the rise of the megadonor—and what this heralds for nonprofits, philanthropy, and democracy writ large. The universal charitable deduction is the urgent policy issue in play, but there is a complementary practice issue that is at least as important, and that is the likely loss of social capital—or relationship—between nonprofits and their supporters. For if nonprofits are indeed complicit in the disengagement of the small donor, that may be good news, as we can do something about it! The systemic roots, of course, will take broader collective work.
