There is an increasing focus on LGBTQ youth in policies and practices, and national advocacy and other organizations are giving more attention to their needs. HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and HHS Principals have issued statements acknowledging Pride Month. It is NASN's position that to provide culturally competent care, school staff and communities should institute affirming policies that support LGBTQ youth. School nurses are uniquely positioned to help LGBTQ youth by creating LGBTQ-affirming spaces, guiding youth toward resources, advocating for school-wide protections, and assuring youth that their identities and feelings are normal and appropriate. NASN's program Advocacy and Action: How School Nurses Can Help LGBTQ Students Thrive articulates how to access current evidence-based practice recommendations for interacting with LGBTQ students and describes measures schools can implement to ensure LGBTQ students feel safe and supported, thereby reducing health disparities these youth experience disproportionately. In addition, the program provides a toolkit with resources and an implementation checklist to create plans for turning 21st-century school nurse advocacy into action.
