On January 6th, 2021, insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol in support of Donald Trump, with many breaking into the building and ransacking offices while members of Congress fled for safety.
John, over 1,000 people have been charged in the Capitol insurrection so far.
Some of the charges include obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder, entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds and forcibly assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding federal officers. And some have even been charged with seditious conspiracy–a charge that’s normally reserved for treason.
In fact, that’s exactly what Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the far-right Oath Keepers was convicted of after a trial before a federal jury. Rhodes was recently sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for–the longest imposed on a January 6th defendant to date.
These charges and sentences are appropriate consequences for these defendants, and the Department of Justice deserves credit for holding them to account.
Here’s where CREW comes in: Some people who were present during the insurrection still hold public office (like Pennsylvania State Senator Doug Mastriano). Some are seeking reelection despite the role they played (like Donald Trump). We’re seeking to enforce their disqualification if they previously swore an oath on the Constitution and are found to have incited or engaged in insurrection.

Before handing down the sentence for Stewart Rhodes, the Oath Keepers founder, Judge Amit Mehta said: “You, sir, present an ongoing threat and a peril to this country and to the republic and to the very fabric of this democracy.”
John, we couldn’t agree more.
The Disqualification Clause of the Constitution exists for this reason: People who have sworn an oath to the Constitution who then engage in insurrection are a threat to our democracy, and they should never be allowed to serve in public office again.
CREW is working to uphold the Disqualification Clause and to stop insurrectionists like Donald Trump from holding office. Please make an urgent donation to support our continued work →
