John, There is a crisis of confidence in the Supreme Court. Designed to be an impartial line of defense for our constitutional rights and basic freedoms, the Court is now ruled by a supermajority of right-wing justices who prioritize corporate interests, megadonors, and anti-democratic forces. It has no interest in upholding the Constitution or the will of the people, as its decisions have gutted the Voting Rights Act, overturned Roe v. Wade, curtailed workers’ rights to organize, allowed partisan gerrymandering, and more. Meanwhile, scandals surrounding current justices have resulted in a loss of faith in the Court. Clarence Thomas has secretly accepted luxury vacations and other gifts from Harlan Crow, a billionaire real estate mogul and major Republican donor, without ever disclosing these gifts in his financial records. Brett Kavanaugh remains on the bench despite numerous credible allegations of sexual assault and perjury that were not properly investigated by the FBI. Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett have refused to recuse themselves from cases where there is a potential conflict of interest. We need to restore balance to the Supreme Court, and that starts with expanding it. Tell Congress: Expand the Supreme Court. It is not constitutionally mandated that the Supreme Court consist of nine justices. Congress has increased the number of justices on the bench seven times throughout history. Doing so would effectively allow us to stop the harm being done by the Court and restore its balance and integrity. In the face of an unaccountable, unethical majority on the Supreme Court determined to strip Americans of our freedoms, we need Congress to deliver the reforms necessary to protect our democracy. That includes expanding the Court. Sign if you agree: Congress must expand the Supreme Court to protect our basic constitutional rights. In solidarity, Free Speech For People |
