Dear John ,
Take action: send a message in support of currrent PFAS legislation. [[link removed]]
There are few things more difficult than facing a medical diagnosis that threatens a loved one’s life – your parent, your sibling, your child. Or, maybe it’s you.
In Marinette, one of more than 30 communities where we know the toxic class of chemicals called PFAS are lurking in the water, families are fighting an adversary set upon them by outside forces, particularly corporate polluters, bad policy, and brazen politicking.
When forced to confront serious illness, politics – and politicians – should be the last thing on our minds. It’s not the politicians who have to look the doctor in the eyes and ask “how bad is this?” It’s certainly not the politicians who have to lay awake at night suffering through the anxiety and fear and sadness of, say, a lost pregnancy or a cancer diagnosis.
Why, then, we must ask ourselves – and our decision makers – are people being poisoned in their own homes while they play politics? While they concentrate on petty political machinations under the bubble of the Capitol Dome, your neighbor (or maybe even you) have to suffer under the consequences of their inaction and political cunning.
It’s especially important to ask now, because there are two bills currently circulating in the Capitol that must be passed into law this session. Rep. John Nygren, whose constituents are bearing a disproportionate brunt of this crisis, introduced the bills as a “compromise.”
This proposed legislation, though not ideal, is important. It will help families in Marinette. We’re asking you to send a message to Rep. Nygren, co-chair of the Joint Finance Committee and a member of the majority party, to get this legislation passed right now. [[link removed]]
However, we cannot allow this compromise to masquerade as a comprehensive solution to the PFAS crisis. There is a gold standard answer to Wisconsin’s PFAS crisis: the CLEAR Act, and many of you have already taken action to support it. Unfortunately, in this political environment, our elected representatives hesitate to do the right thing even when it’s staring them right in the face.
After Rep. Nygren steps up and gets the compromise legislation passed, he must come back to the Capitol next session and work to get the CLEAR Act made into law.
Tell him so right now. [[link removed]]
