Dear Ward 8 residents,

June is Pride Month. Pride celebrates inclusivity, freedom of expression and the collision of diversity and LGBTQ+ individuals. It is about reinforcing equal rights for all people. I am proud to live in an inclusive city where residents feel accepted for who they are without discrimination or shame.

In 2020, my office created the Ward 8 Commission on LGBTQ to focus on and address issues affecting Ward 8 LGBTQ. I am proud that this commission fosters and promotes acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community and works to support the priorities of LGBTQ+ residents in Ward 8.

For residents looking to celebrate and join the LGBTQ+ community for the festivities, the Capital Pride festival will take place on Sunday, June 11th, along Pennsylvania Avenue NW, starting at noon. The festivities will include food vendors, entertainment, and over 300 exhibitors.

Councilmember White moved an emergency measure on behalf of the residents of the 400 block of Xenia Street to relocate three trees from the neighborhood following a mistake on the DDOT notice sent to the residents, identifying the 600 block of Condon Terrace, SE, rather than the 400 block of Xenia Street as the area for planting of the trees.

In November 2020, DDOT planted 22 trees on this block and immediately received pushback from the community. After some discussion, DDOT removed 14 of the trees. The three remaining trees to be relocated are adolescent American basswood trees that may grow up to 60 feet tall with a 30-foot width.

Residents of this condominium have since requested the final replacement of the trees based on the devaluation of their property value and the reasonable fear that the trees, once matured, will be large enough to make it difficult to see through and around the walkway, presenting a public safety concern.

After much debate with other members who had some concerns about the measure, Councilmember White made the decision to pull the measure and plans to reintroduce following more discussion with his Council colleagues and DDOT to find a resolution.

Councilmember White's Constituent Services Team had the opportunity to learn some dance moves from Step Afrika alongside Van Ness Elementary School students.

Step Afrika demonstrated some basic steps and percussive dance rhythms originating from African-American fraternities and sororities. The students were very enthusiastic and eager to learn and participate in the fun.
